Police Property and Evidence Room Air Quality Woes

Respiratory Health Risks - Airborne Particulates - Gas Phase Contaminants (VOCs) - Microorganisms (Viruses, etc)

Airborne Particulates
Evidence rooms are basically for the storage and safe-keeping of private property, blood evidence, and drugs and in many places nowadays, a lot of cannabis or marijuana (they stink). But, one thing for sure you will find are lots of particles or particulates. There are molds, dust mites, dust mite feces (where there are dust mites of course), allergens, pollen, Aspergillus, Acremonium, etc. Some folks just can’t tolerate a lot of these different particulates. Most are harmful. Some folks could handle these particulates and have none whatsoever bad health effects, but then there’ll be others who may have reached their threshold level of tolerance, and can no longer tolerate them, and these airborne contaminants become detrimental to their health.

Gas Phase Contaminants (VOCs)
VOCs are those gases you generally can smell. They have an odor. The best of the best or the worst of the worst is Cannabis, Marijuana. Marijuana, when it’s the whole plant, roots, and soil, chances are you will pick up the odor of the mold, and there would be mold spores, and there would possibly be Aspergillus. Exposure to or breathing in VOCs in the long term is not healthy for the lungs, our respiratory system- they can lead to breathing issues, asthma, sinus problems, shortness of breathe.

Microorganisms (Viruses,etc)
These are the viruses (like the recent Covid-19), bacteria, and fungi.

Multi-Stage Filtration
Our air purifiers, air filtration systems use a multi-stage filtration approach: a particulate pre-filter stage, a chemical gas phase filter for the VOCs and odors (usually a blend of activated charcoal or carbon), and a medical grade HEPA filter for airborne fine particulates.

Acremonium

The genus Acremonium contains about 100 species, of which most are saprophytic, being isolated from dead plant material and soil. Many species are recognized as opportunistic pathogens of man and animals, causing eumycetomaonychomycosis, and hyalohyphomycosis. Infections of humans by fungi of this genus are rare,[4]but clinical manifestations of hyalohyphomycosis caused by Acremonium may include arthritisosteomyelitisperitonitisendocarditispneumoniacerebritis, and subcutaneous infection.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fungus

fungus (pl.: fungi [2] or funguses [3]) is any member of the group of eukaryotic organisms that includes microorganisms such as yeasts and molds, as well as the more familiar mushrooms. These organisms are classified as one of the traditional eukaryotic kingdoms, along with AnimaliaPlantaeand either Protista [4] or Protozoa and Chromista.[5]

About "Activated" Carbon Carbon that is 'activated' undergoes a process that opens up millions of tiny pores and fissures to enhance the material's adsorbent properties. The process creates a very large internal surface area, which is key to the power of activated carbon - the more surface area - the more the carbon can adsorb. Only one pound of activated carbon typically has a surface area of 125 acres. Activated carbon is so effective that it's used in military gas masks.

About HEPA Filters HEPA stands for high efficiency particulate air filter and describes a filter that can remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles 0.3 microns in diameter. Particles of this size are used to evaluate the performance of a filter because they are among the most difficult to remove. However, particles that are larger or smaller than 0.3 microns can be filtered with even greater efficiency due to the nature of the filter’s design. True HEPA filters are composed of a dense web of fibers designed to trap particles. This type of filter was first used in the 1940’s to trap radioactive contaminants in the air and protect scientists who were developing the first nuclear weapons. Today, HEPA is considered the safest and most efficient method to treat airborne particles.
